About LIC

Why Ladies in Control exists

LIC was founded on a clear observation: women lead, build, and uphold the governance and control architecture of organisations worldwide — yet operate largely without a dedicated professional ecosystem of their own.

From the Chief Compliance Officer to the Internal Audit Manager, from the Head of ESG to the DPO — these are the women who set and enforce the standards. LIC is built for them. By them.

Vision

A world where women in control functions shape institutional resilience at the highest levels — recognised, connected, and empowered to define standards globally.

Mission

To build the premier global network for women across governance, risk, compliance, and control — enabling professional excellence, visibility, and leadership at every level.

FRAMEWORK

Three Lines of Defence

LIC members operate across all three lines — from business units and control functions to internal audit and the board. Understanding the model is foundational to our work.

1

FIRST LINE

Business & Operations

Owns and manages risk day-to-day. Responsible for implementing controls within business processes and operations.

2

SECOND LINE

Risk, Compliance & Control

Provides oversight, frameworks, and independent challenge. The professional home of the majority of LIC members.

3

THIRD LINE

Internal Audit & Assurance

Provides independent assurance to the board and executive management on the effectiveness of governance and control.

OUR VALUES

The principles that
hold the line

I

INTEGRITY

We hold ourselves to the same standards we advocate for. Every member, every interaction, every publication reflects the professional rigour that defines our community.

E

EXCELLENCE

LIC is a network built on substance. We pursue the highest standards of professional knowledge, insight, and practice — setting the benchmark others follow.

C

COLLABORATION

The control functions that LIC serves are interdependent — and so are we. Genuine collaboration across disciplines, geographies, and career stages is our greatest asset.

R

RESILIENCE

We build organisations that endure — and we build women who lead them. Resilience is both what our members do professionally and what LIC cultivates individually.

I

INCLUSION

From analyst to board director, from Nairobi to London. Inclusion at LIC means genuine access — to knowledge, opportunity, mentorship, and the network itself.

P

PROFESSIONALISM

LIC is a professional institution, not a social club. Every programme, event, and communication reflects the executive standard our members already live by.

GRICC+AI

Our professional
taxonomy

The seven categories of expertise that define the LIC ecosystem — from classical governance to frontier AI oversight.

  • Board composition and effectiveness
  • Corporate accountability frameworks
  • Stakeholder management
  • Executive remuneration governance
  • Institutional ethics and culture

Enterprise Risk Management

Identifying, assessing, and managing the full spectrum of risks facing an organisation — from financial and operational to strategic, conduct, and systemic risks.

  • Enterprise risk frameworks (COSO, ISO 31000)
  • Operational resilience
  • Conduct and behavioural risk
  • Systemic and concentration risk

Internal Control & Assurance

The processes, policies, and activities designed to provide reasonable assurance regarding the achievement of objectives — reliability, efficiency, and compliance.

  • Control design and testing
  • SOX and ICFR compliance
  • Three-lines-of-defence integration
  • Assurance mapping
  • Control deficiency remediation

Regulatory Compliance

  • AML, KYC, and financial crime
  • Conduct and market integrity
  • Sanctions compliance
  • Regulatory examination management

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)

From disclosure frameworks to sustainability strategy, ESG has become a core control discipline — subject to regulatory scrutiny, assurance requirements, and board-level accountability.

  • CSRD and ESRS reporting
  • Double materiality assessment
  • Taxonomy alignment
  • Scope 1/2/3 emissions governance
  • Social and human rights due diligence

Cybersecurity & Information Resilience

As cyber threats escalate, control functions must understand cyber risk governance, incident response, and the regulatory expectations now placed on boards and second-line functions.

  • NIST and ISO 27001 frameworks
  • DORA operational resilience
  • Third-party cyber risk
  • Incident classification and reporting
  • Cyber risk appetite governance

AI Governance & Model Risk

The most rapidly evolving domain in control functions. AI governance requires a new literacy from risk, compliance, and audit professionals — one that LIC is building.

  • EU AI Act compliance
  • AI risk classification and assessment
  • Model governance and validation
  • AI ethics and bias monitoring
  • Algorithmic accountability
